Stethoscope

Or as my daughter calls it, “Doctors.” I promised her I would make her some “doctors” after I found her trying to put the end of the cords to our living room blinds in her ears. We’ve seen a lot of actual doctors lately for my son, and I think she likes them as long as they’re not going to examine her. Please excuse my terminology, I’m sure there are proper names for each part of the stethoscope, but I have no idea what those would be.

Materials:

  • worsted weight fuschia, gray, white
  • G-sized crochet hook
  • glue gun, optional

I tried these in black and I hard a really hard time differentiating between the stitches on what is now pink. I blocked my Earpiece “Wires” by simply by wetting them and pinning them flat to dry.

There are 1001 ways to ch 6 in a ring, and most people have a method they prefer. Feel free to ch 6 in a ring however makes you happy for the circular pieces (the scope top and bottom) BUT the rest of the pattern needs to be followed as written. The ear buds and earpiece cord are meant to be tubes open at both ends, and the bottom cord is meant to be closed on row 1.

I glued mine together, but it would be very possible to sew for those of you who don’t like glue.

Bottom cord
1) ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join with sl st (6)
2-35) ch 1, sc in each sc, join with sl st (6)
36) ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around, join with sl st (12)
37) ch 1, sc in each sc around, join with sl st (12)
break yarn, finish off

Earpiece cord
1) ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join with sl st (6)
2-25) ch 1, sc in each sc, join with sl st (6)
break yarn, finish off

Crosspiece
1) ch 12, sc in 2nd ch from hook to end (11)
break yarn, finish off

Ear Buds (make 2)
1) ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join with sl st (6)
2-4) ch 1, sc in each sc, join with sl st (6)
break yarn, finish off

Earpiece “Wire” (make 2)
1) ch 37, sc in 2nd ch from hook to end (36)
break yarn, finish off

Scope Top
1) ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join with sl st (6)
2) ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around, join with sl st (12)
3) ch 1, *sc, 2 sc in next sc* around, join with sl st (18)
4) ch 1, *sc2, 2 sc in next sc* around, join with sl st (24)
break yarn, finish off

Scope Middle
1) ch 12, join with sl st to form ring, sc in each ch around, join with sl st (12)
2) ch 1, sc in each sc around, join with sl st (12)
break yarn, finish off

Scope Bottom
1) ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join with sl st (6)
2) ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around, join with sl st (12)
3) ch 1, *sc, 2 sc in next sc* around, join with sl st (18)
break yarn, finish off

Assembly
Attach crosspiece to earpiece cord as shown. Attach open part of bottom cord to the bottom bend on earpiece cord. Attach scope top and scope bottom to either side of scope middle, then attach to bottom of bottom cord. Insert earpiece “wire” into earpiece cord on one side and ear bud on the other and attach. Repeat for other side.

  1. I LOVE this! I've a cousin who is an LPN. She'll be receiving a stethoscope as soon as I can crochet one! Thank you so much!

  2. thanks a million! I'm making these stat!

  3. Thank you everyone! 😀

  4. Can we sell what we make from this pattern? 🙂

  5. Absolutely. Any of the patterns on here except for the licensed characters (and, of course, the patterns themselves) can be made and sold for profit.

  6. Thank you SO much! I just started my own business and it's such a hassle trying to find things I can make to sell. I've created a few things…but even that's tougher than it sounds lol

  7. I love this! I am starting clinicals for an RN program and we have to ID our bags. I am gonna string this on my handle.

  8. Aww, yay!! Good luck with your clinicals! 😀

  9. Dear Joy!!!I am a vet and I really love knitting!I crochet just a little bit so I will ask my mother do it for me!!!!you are really talented!!!

  10. Thank you! 😀 If you crochet a little, you should totally try this.

  11. what kind of glue did you use?

  12. Just a high-melt hot glue gun.

  13. Ok. That's what I use too. Just wondered. Thanks!

  14. Brother-in-law’s girlfriend just officially became an RN and started a job at the Mayo Clinic in Florida. I think I have to send her one of these! 🙂

  15. I have a problem with this pattern: if I inhance of one ch each row my bottom cord gets biggers! I’ve made 6 sc plus 1 st in the 1st row (=7 stitches), 1 ch plus 6 sc plus 1 st in the 2nd row (=8 stitches) etc. Moreover my work rolls on itself..How can I solve these issues?

    (sorry 4 my english, I’m Italian )

    • Aha! The joining sl st doesn’t count as an additional stitch, it’s just meant to join it. Each round should have the 6 sc and the joining stitch, skip the joining stitch and just join it again. It should be a 6 sc tube all the way up. If you’re more comfortable with continuous rounds, you can make it that way.

The ear wires will roll onto themselves, that’s normal. You can block them straight if you’re not using acrylic yarn, or you can use foundationless sc to make them. Here’s my favorite tutorial for foundationless sc: http://snuffykin.livejournal.com/43642.html

I hope that helped, but if you have any more questions, please ask!

  16. Thank you very much for your answer! 🙂 just few more questions:
1.the fsc is used to skip the additional chain, isn’t it?
2.so in the first row I make 6 sc and join the 1st to the 6th one using the sl st, then in the second row I make 1 sc in the same stitch which has been joined to the last sc, other 5 stitches and join with a sl st?

soooo sorry for annoying you, I learnt knitting just a month ago! Take is as a compliment: you have an overseas fan! 🙂

    • The fsc is for the earpiece wires, it’ll make them straight and less likely to roll onto themselves. So instead of ch 37, sc in 2nd ch from hook to end, you would just fsc 37 stitches. It can be a little hard to count, but I find it works a lot better for things you want to be straight.

Yes, that’s how you do the bottom cord!

You’re not annoying me at all, questions are good! 😀 Thank you!

  17. thank u 🙂

I’ve been making the mustache mug cozy. I showed one to my sister who is a NICU RN. She said “Oh, it’s cute. Can you make one with a stethoscope?”.
I dreaded trying to figure out a pattern, until I remembered seeing your pattern on the crochet projects ideas page on facebook.
I am going to make it using a steel hook and size 5 thread. I have two shades of silver. I will probably add a bright color for a pop of interest. Thank you for this pattern.

ok maybe I’m just tired but in the scope top and the scope bottom what does the asterisks mean

Thank you, I’m almost finished with 2 of them… My roommates are going to love these.

  21. Hi, thanks for the pattern, I’m working on it now. I have a question about the scope top, line 4. “sc2, 2 sc in next sc” Does that mean sc in next 2 sc, then 2sc? At first I thought you meant sc2tog, but that wouldn’t be right.

  23. I was on Pintrest today and saw this stethoscope and I love it. My home care nurse was here today and I was telling her that I saw a purple stethoscope yesterday. We both love anything purple. I laughed when I saw your stethoscope because I knew that I would have to make a purple one before she comes next time.Thank you for the pattern and for putting a smile on my face despite the incredible pain I’m in today. 😀😃😆💜💜💜
Have a very happy New Year!
